How does a language sound like, beyond the words' meaning? How much does the sound of a language influence us? How does the sound of a language speak to us? The project LOGOS MATER by Amelie Duchow derives from a deep reflection on these questions. The audio composition of LOGOS MATER takes inspiration from different phonetic and acoustic sound elements associated with the origins and emotional values of the world's languages. Amelie Duchow invites people from all over the world to participate in this project providing a webpage in which every person can record his own voice leaving it to the artists sound analysis and the resulting creative process of manipulation and alteration. https://www.extrasync.net/logosmater/index.html Every sound used in the audio composition derives from the vocal contributions which will confer identity and uniqueness to the development of the live performance. The composition of LOGOS MATER emerges in a global language that does not express itself with words but with sound, seeking to “speak” and connect us at least for a moment by transcending cultural and geographical boundaries. The performance invites the audience to reflect on the significance of languages in shaping our individual and collective identities and on the fact that humanity today is facing a massive extinction: languages are disappearing at an unprecedented pace as over 40% of the world’s approximate 7,000 languages are at risk of disappearing. The webpage remains active throughout the projects presentations and every live of LOGOS MATER will incorporate the latest voice contributions.
For the live performance a specially developed device in form of an equipped world globe permits the artist to control and manipulate the world languages in real time. The voice contributions from all over the world and the ones left a few days before the performance get assigned on this special globe to their respective countries, allowing to create live a deep and eclectic layering of voices that bridges cultures and geography through sound. The composition of LOGOS MATER is among the winners of the open call initiated by Raster for soundtrack Europe 2025. https://europe2025.raster-media.net/inthefield/
